The High to Low Wood Chop with Band is a dynamic rotational strength exercise that mimics chopping wood, using a resistance band anchored high above to pull diagonally across the body to a low position on the opposite side. It primarily targets the abs, especially the obliques, while engaging the core, shoulders, and hips for rotational power and stability. Ideal for athletes, fighters, or anyone building functional core strength, it requires only a resistance band.
How to Perform High to Low Wood Chop with Band
- 1Anchor the resistance band high on a sturdy door or post at about head height, then step away to create tension while holding the band handle with both hands.
- 2Stand facing the anchor point with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and arms extended straight up toward the anchor.
- 3Rotate your torso away from the anchor so your arms are pulled across your body in a diagonal line down toward your opposite knee, pivoting on your back foot.
- 4Exhale as you powerfully pull the band down and across in a chopping motion, rotating your hips and engaging your core to drive the movement.
- 5Inhale as you slowly return to the starting position with control, resisting the band's pull to maintain tension.
- 6Complete 8-12 reps per side, then switch stance to work the opposite side.
- 7Key form tips: Keep your core braced throughout to protect your spine; move from your hips and obliques, not just arms; avoid locking knees or rounding your back—common mistakes that reduce effectiveness and risk injury.
