The Towel Row is a bodyweight strength exercise performed by draping a towel over a sturdy door handle or bar, gripping both ends, and pulling your body upward while leaning back to row against resistance created by your body angle. Its primary purpose is to build upper body pulling strength and improve posture. It mainly targets the shoulders, back, and rear deltoids, benefiting beginners to intermediate trainees seeking equipment-free back development and scapular stability.
How to Perform Towel Row
- 1Stand facing a sturdy door or vertical pole with a towel draped over it at chest height; grip both ends of the towel firmly with palms facing each other.
- 2Step back with both feet until your body is at a 45-degree angle to the floor, arms fully extended, knees slightly bent, and core engaged.
- 3Inhale as you prepare, then exhale while pulling your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades together to draw your chest toward the towel.
- 4Pause briefly at the top with your chest near the towel, maintaining tension in the towel.
- 5Inhale as you slowly extend your arms forward to return to the starting position, controlling the descent.
- 6Repeat for desired reps, keeping your body straight like a plank throughout.
- 7Key form tips: Maintain a neutral spine—avoid arching your back or shrugging shoulders; keep hips aligned with shoulders; pull with your back, not arms. Common mistakes: Using momentum or letting elbows flare out wide.
