Rolling Thunder

UnilateralStrength

No video available

Rolling Thunder is a thick-handle grip strength exercise using a rotating, oversized handle (commonly ~60 mm) attached to a loading pin or plates. You deadlift or hold the implement to build crushing and supporting grip. Ideal for strongman athletes, climbers, and lifters chasing grip PRs; requires a Rolling Thunder handle (or equivalent thick rotating grip) and plates.

How to Perform Rolling Thunder

  1. 1Attach the Rolling Thunder handle to a loading pin or compatible plate stack and load a challenging but controllable weight.
  2. 2Stand over the implement with feet hip-width, hinge to grip the thick rotating handle firmly with one hand.
  3. 3Brace the core, set the shoulder, then deadlift the load by extending the hips and knees until you stand tall—or hold at lockout for time.
  4. 4Keep the wrist as neutral as possible; the handle will try to rotate—fight it with grip tension.
  5. 5Lower under control to the floor, reset, and repeat. Switch hands across sets.
  6. 6Key form tips: Use chalk; start light to learn the rotation; do not hitch with the free hand. Common mistakes: overloading before grip adapts, rounding the back, or neglecting the eccentric.
