Dumbbell Snatch

DumbbellUnilateralStrength

No video available

The Dumbbell Snatch is an explosive, unilateral strength exercise that takes a dumbbell from the floor (or hang) to a locked-out overhead position in one fluid motion. It builds power, coordination, and full-body strength with emphasis on the hips, shoulders, and posterior chain. Ideal for athletes and conditioning work, it requires a single dumbbell and solid hip-hinge mechanics.

How to Perform Dumbbell Snatch

  1. 1Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, dumbbell on the floor between your feet, handle aligned with mid-foot.
  2. 2Hinge at the hips, soft knees, flat back, and grip the dumbbell with one hand; free hand out for balance.
  3. 3Brace the core, then explosively drive the hips forward while pulling the dumbbell upward close to the body.
  4. 4As the dumbbell rises past the hips, punch your hand through and lock the arm overhead in one continuous motion.
  5. 5Finish tall with the arm locked out, bicep near the ear, glutes and core tight.
  6. 6Lower under control to the hang or floor, then repeat. Switch arms across sets or reps.
  7. 7Key form tips: Power comes from the hips, not a bent-arm curl; keep the path close; lock out fully overhead. Common mistakes: early arm pull, incomplete lockout, or rounding the back.
